September 26-30

Fall is here, and we are “falling” right into our routines in second grade! We have a full week ahead this week. This week we do not have a WAVE day, so we will be very busy this week.

This week in class we are learning how to answer written comprehension questions by including 2 details from the text along with your own words, so reading homework is going to look a little different. Your child will have a reading fluency passage to read and on the back one question that has 2 "think about it" boxes and a section at the bottom where they put it all together. In the boxes they will be citing their text evidence and ultimately at the bottom they will be combining the evidence with their own words. If at all possible I would like them to work on this in "chunks". One night find their one or two pieces of text evidence, and then on the last night putting it all together. Each night I would like them to read the passage first. The fluency passages are meant to be one minute timed passages, but I am not requiring that to be done...if it is something you would like to work on with your child, feel free, but it is not required. The passages are short, and great to reiterate what we will be learning each day in class. I apologize if this sounds confusing, I think it will all make sense once you see their homework. Once you take a look at the homework if you have questions, please let me know.

What we are learning

Reading- Story elements, how to answer written comprehension questions, finishing up assessments.

Grammar- adjectives

Letterland- short and long “e” and “o”

Writing- small moments

Science- Scientific method, weather

Math-addition and subtraction strategies

September 19-23

I hope you all have enjoyed this beautiful weekend! We have another full week ahead in second grade.

Reading- comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expanding vocabulary strategies to use while reading.

Math- addition strategies

A few things

·         Monday we have Makerspace

·         Thursday is an early release day.  Students will be dismissed at 12:20.  If your child will be going home a different way than they typically do, please send in a note so I know how they are getting home.

·         It is lollipop week!  Lollipops are 50 cents each and all money is due Thursday.  Lollipops will be given out at dismissal Friday to enjoy at home.

·         Friday is our WAVE day…don’t forget the tennis shoes!

·         Please don’t forget to send in a snack with your child each day. Also, feel free to send in a water bottle to alleviate frequent trips to the water fountain.

IMPORTANT

Going to the restroom during class has become a significant issue.  I allow students to use the restroom as needed during independent work and I just ask that while I am in front of the class teaching, they don’t leave unless it is an emergency.   I have several students who consistently leave the room and some who are gone for 10 minutes or more at a time several times a day.  If you could help me by talking with your children about “doing their business”  and then getting back to class, I would greatly appreciate it.  Unfortunately, I have had teachers report to me they have seen students from my room lingering around the water fountain and restroom, often waiting for classmates or chatting with friends in other classes.  I think it is important that everyone be able to use the restroom as they need to go since we only take a few whole class restroom breaks each day.   If your child has a medical issue that requires them to be out of the room more often, please let me know.  Otherwise, I will implement a separate procedure for students who continue to leave the room excessively.   If you have any questions or concerns regarding this issue please let me know.  I appreciate your continued support!

Have a fantastic week!

September 12-16

We are off to a good start this school year! Last week, even though short, we were able to get quite a bit accomplished. Our reading assessments are going well, we are getting acquainted with Daily 5 expectations, and we have gotten started in our math text book.

One thing I have noticed is Pokémon cards have made their way into Mrs. Mowell’s room! I would appreciate it if we would leave Pokémon cards at home. Several students prefer to play with cards at recess instead of moving around. We work so hard in class, we really need our recess time to get our wiggles out. I appreciate your support with the “No Pokémon Zone” in my room.

I have had several inquiries about volunteering in the classroom. I am thrilled to have so much parental involvement and support! Please give me a few more weeks to get routines and behavior management expectations going good and I will be more than happy for you to come in. I know I would love help with taking students to the Patriot store as well as working with small reading and math groups. I had anticipated a need for classroom management during reading assessments, but my students are really doing well with staying on task during their independent work. I will send an email when I am ready for volunteers and I look forward to working with you!

What we are learning:

Reading- Continuing with assessments, Daily 5, and story elements

Writing- personal narratives

Letterland- We will begin this week with our intro to Letterland! I will not be sending home weekly spelling work and words to study, it is my expectation that students will learn weekly patterns and be successful without “memorizing” words at home.

Grammar- Nouns and adjectives

Math- Continuing with addition and subtraction strategies

Science- scientific method

Social Studies- communities, Patriot Day and Constitution Day

A Few things

·         Monday is our first Monday Morning Meeting! Our first fundraiser of the year will kick off. Look for information in your child’s backpack.

·         Monday evening at 5:30 is our first PTO meeting. Please come out and support our AMAZING PTO, they do some really great things for our teachers and students!

·         Wednesday is our WAVE day…don’t forget the tennis shoes!

·         Thursday all snack money is due. Snacks are 50 cents each and will be delivered Friday!

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me. Have a great week!

August 29-September 2

Tomorrow begins our first of 180 days in second grade! I am excited to get the year started. It was a pleasure to meet you all at Open House Thursday afternoon.

This week we will be working on procedures, labeling our supplies, doing some fun getting to know you and community building activities, as well as some pre assessments in spelling, writing, and math. We will also begin our introduction into Daily 5 which we will be using for our literacy block and Math Daily 3 which we will use during our math block.

Tomorrow I will send home a letter all about my classroom and what to expect in second grade. The letter will be on green paper. If you would, please read over the information and let me know if you have any questions regarding the information. Please sign the back page and return it to school Tuesday. You may keep the other two pages at home for your records. I will also be sending home Class Dojo information sheets and log-ins this week. I will be utilizing Class Dojo in addition to our clip chart for behavior management. I have used Class Dojo in the past, and students seem to really enjoy it. I have not used the program since they incorporated some upgrades which include a communication component. For now, the best form of communication with me will be email. I check my email on a regular basis and will get back to you fairly quickly.

I will be discussing behavior management with the students and implementing the clip chart on Tuesday. I want to send home the information to you and give you a chance to look over it and discuss it with your children first.

This year we will be utilizing a new online learning platform, Edmentum, county wide. As soon as I get log-ins for your children I will be sending them home. In the front cover of the Stateside handbook is an area for you to write down user names and passwords in one location.

Homework folders will begin coming home tomorrow so we can get in the habit of taking them home each day. Homework will not begin until next Tuesday.

A few things

·         We will begin labeling supplies tomorrow. We will be using 5 notebooks and 3 folders to start the year so please make sure your student brings their supplies with them tomorrow.

·         Return all Open House paperwork as soon as possible

·         We will have snack each afternoon. Please send in a snack for your child each day.
