reminder for wax museum
Good evening parents,
Just wanted to send out a reminder that the boards are not due until Tuesday. Please don't send the boards in until then.  I don't have room in the classroom and I don't want anything to accidentally happen to them.  I also don't want something to happen to all of their hard work if they are riding the bus. The going back and forth on the bus could ruin their projects.  Also, please have your child check the rubric and make sure they have everything they need on the board.  We are almost done and I look forward to seeing the final, creative projects they bring in next week.  Have a good evening. Sincerely, Ms. Montellano

Good evening parents,

I wanted to remind you that we are doing reading benchmark tests for the next two weeks. These are very important tests. I would like it  if you could please speak with your children about the importance of taking the tests seriously and also staying quiet in class while others are testing.  Our class is having a hard time working independently during testing.  If you could please talk with your students about the importance of the tests I would appreciate your support.

Also, I sent out the parent portal information which is great information for you to have at your finger tips.  You will be able to see whether or not your child turned in their homework.  Homework can be checked at home, then you can make sure I received the homework by checking the parent portal.

welcome letter

Ms. Montellano’s Classroom Management/Behavior/Information

Welcome to Third Grade. The first week is always an important time for the students to settle into routines and “dust off” those good listening skills and quiet work habits that have been on vacation all summer.  Next week we will be extensively practicing, modeling, and reviewing all rules and procedures.  Below is an outline of some important information I want you to know about our class.

Behavior:  Students are expected to follow the classroom rules:

1.     Be Nice

2.    Raise Hand to Speak

3.    Show Respect

4.    Stay in your Seat!

5.    Learn

In the classroom and throughout the school, students can earn patriots bucks, treats, stickers, and compliments for displaying good citizenship, scholarship, and doing the right thing.  Students may then use their money earned at the Patriot store to purchase items.

If students are not making wise choices they will be given a verbal warning and then asked to clip down.  This year Stateside Elementary is doing a school wide color system.  It is as follows:

·         Red: Ready to Lead (this is where you want your student to be)

·         White: Warning

·         Blue: Behavior Reflection

Your student will have the opportunity to clip back up if they correct the behavior that they were portraying before.  Since red is the TOP of the behavior chart, students who are being Super Patriots will be rewarded punches on their punch cards as positive reinforcement.  Students will cash in their punches for Patriot Bucks on Friday.

Snacks:  We will have a snack each day.  Students are permitted to bring in a small, healthy, individual snack.  If a utensil will be needed, please ensure students have one with them.

Class Information/Updates: I will send a great deal of classroom information and updates through e-mail, letters, or post it on my website.  Please make sure I have an e-mail that works and can easily reach you.  If you prefer me to send you a hard copy, I will happily make copies and send home in students’ homework folders. If you have not had an opportunity to check the class website yet, the following is directions on how you can access it:

1.     Visit the school website http://stateside.nc.oce.schoolinsites.com/

2.    Click on Patriot Staff

3.    Find our class, listed by name…Montellano, Melissa

Homework: Starting the second week of school we will start having homework each night.  At the beginning of each month students will get a new homework calendar that outlines each night’s homework.  Homework will be written into the students agenda as well each night. They will turn in all homework for the week on Friday.  We will not have a great deal of homework. Students need to have the opportunity to play outside and enjoy doing extracurricular activities.   If you have any questions or concerns about homework at any time, please let me know.

Morning Work:  Each morning when students enter the room, they are responsible for reading and following the directions given on the board and to complete the list in the order it was written.  This helps your child organize his or her work, materials, and time for the day.  Routine procedures for that time will also include unpacking and putting away book bags, making lunch choices, using the restroom, and turning in homework assignments.  Students who finish their morning work early have a variety of choices of activities to do so they are occupied and not a disturbance to other students.

Money:  If you send money into school, please make sure it is in an envelope/baggie with your students name, teacher’s name, amount, and the purpose for the money.

Reading:  Students will be participating in many different reading adventures in Third Grade. We will be working with Daily 5, Read to Achieve, EOG test prep, and many other things to ensure that the students are prepared for their End of Grade Test.

Read to Achieve is a big part of Third Grade reading.  There is a form in your packet that you will need to read over about read to achieve and return.  If you have any further questions I will be glad to answer them.

Writing:  Students in third grade write for many reasons.  The goal is to write clearly and in an interesting manner.  By the end of the year, students should be able to write at least five paragraphs which are clear and written using proper conventions.  We will write in short class lessons, in research, journaling, and in creative poems and stories.  Students will be given a writing sample at the beginning of the year and then at the end of each grading period to monitor progress.  Capitalization, punctuation, word usage, and sentence structure will be taught in the context of the students’ writing and word study.  Students will work with narrative, opinion, informative, and back to narrative writing.  We will also be focusing on writing for understanding during written comprehension lessons.

Math:  In third grade we will be focusing on math a lot and students will be tested on their math skills on the End of Grade test.  Students will be working on their multiplication tables as well as division.  Students will be rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, multiplying one digit numbers by two digit numbers, studying fractions, and solving multiplication and division within 100 with word problems.  There are many skills that are important in math that students will learn in third grade.

Grades: students will get actual number grades this year.  They will be graded on almost everything. (Homework, classwork, quizzes, test, etc.)  This will be a big change for a lot of students because if they do not turn something in the will receive a 0 for that assignment.  I will allow for makeup assignments with a valid reason.  We are on a 10 point grade scale.  It is as follows:

A: 100-90

B: 89-80

C: 79-70

D: 69-60

F: 60 and below.

Volunteers:  I am looking forward to working with you very soon.  Please allow me some time to get the children established in our routines and procedures before inviting you in to help.  I will have general classroom stuff to do, but more importantly, I am looking for parents to help read with the students and individual/group math help.  You know the saying, “It Takes A Village…..”

In closing, I have briefly addressed a few of my policies and general information.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.  When your child comes into my class we all become a team.  If parents and teachers work together each child will experience the best we have to offer.

I really do appreciate all your support and cooperation getting the year underway!!

Ms. Melissa Montellano

Powerschool for parents

Dear parents,

As we start a new 9 weeks I wanted to remind you that we have a great tool for parents on powerschools..  This tool allows you to check your child's grades any time.  The Stateside website has information or you can come into the office and pick up a form.  This is a very helpful tool for parents to see what is turned in and know right away when something is missing. Super easy process and a great tool for parents to know right away when their child is missing something. Students have the entire 9 weeks to get their work in and are given time in class to complete missing assignments.
Report cards went home yesterday. Please sign the outside of the envelope so that I know it has made it home.  This is the only way I have to make sure you have seen it.  Thank you to those of you who have returned it already.

Please consider helping the Specials team (Art, Music, PE, Cultural Awareness, Spanish, Makerspace and Guidance) by providing some baked goods for our CAKE WALK at the Fall Festival!  It can be homemade or store-bought and any kind of yummy treat will do:  cake, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, etc.  Please place baked good in a disposable container.  It would be helpful if you could email Mrs. Craig at wendy.craig@onslow.k12.nc.us if you will be donating something.  Drop items off in the Art or Music room on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, at any time during the school day.
Thank you!

Transportation changes and notes

Good morning parents,

Just a reminder that if your child is signed up and you have given permission for after school music or any other after school activity I will be sending them to that activity. I will need a note from a parent stating any changes.  We have a lot of after school activities going on and I need to make sure your children are where they are supposed to be.
This brings me to bus changes. If there is a transportation change please send me a note, email me, or call the school.  I have 22 babies to make sure I am sending home the correct way.  I am more than happy to make the changes I just need a note or even an email just to make sure I get your children where they need to be. Thank you so much, Ms. Montellano

I was really proud of them they did great on the first test.  We also started taking the USA Test Prep tests this week. That test will continue next week.  We have another busy week ahead.
Monday is Labor Day so enjoy your day off.
Tuesday is WAVE Day so the students will be turning in their spelling homework, taking a spelling test, and getting new words.
Wednesday is the beginning of grade test.  That will take up most of our morning.
Thursday we will be getting back to reading and answering questions.  We will also continue with place value.
Friday we will have our second math test and continue reading passages.
Benchmarking testing will continue for the next two weeks and I will be sending the results of that test home as soon as we are done.
Something fun we did this week was make a diversity necklace. Each student chose a bead and we added a bead to our necklace after saying something nice about that student.  Our necklace is hanging up in our classroom as a reminder of how important diversity is.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and I hope you have a good week. Sincerely, Ms. Montellano
